Inventory methods note drafting template

Write a methods note that explains the inventory you are actually handing over. This template gives the preparer twelve sections in which to write original wording, connect supporting evidence, describe limitations and record review decisions. It leaves the narrative to the person who understands the calculation.
The blank working sheet contains a fixed drafting scaffold with editable response fields. A separate Fictional example demonstrates evidence-linked wording and unresolved work. Read me explains the fields. The workbook does not generate a methods note from numerical inputs or supply a statement of conformity.

Boundary, activity, factor and estimation evidence support the preparer’s own wording in Nitium’s twelve-section scaffold. Limitations, open actions and review records stay connected to the note.
Gather the evidence before drafting
Fix the inventory title, reporting period, version and intended recipient. Identify the calculation file and result tables that the note will explain.
Bring together the boundary decisions, activity records, factor register, estimation or allocation calculations and quality-review evidence. Confirm which versions applied to this inventory.
Check that the intended reader can obtain the referenced evidence through an approved route. A confidential source can be identified without copying unnecessary sensitive detail into the note.
Write each section against those records, then identify the assumptions, omissions and questions that still limit the explanation.
Explain the work in your own words
Describe the actual coverage and calculation process clearly enough that another person can locate the relevant inputs and outputs. For a calculation family, identify its activity measure, units, method, factor references and workbook location. Where an estimate was needed, explain its basis and why its limitations matter for the stated use.
Name the decision record behind the boundary and the evidence behind the factor selection. A broad phrase such as “standard methodology used” will not tell the next reader which edition, data period, gas basis or source locator to check. The template is a place to write that explanation, not a substitute for making the decisions.
Keep location-based and market-based Scope 2 treatments identifiable where relevant. Refer to the calculation actually delivered, and retain any unresolved question about the applicable reporting method. The template does not select a Scope 2 method or decide whether a requirement applies.
Make limitations and unresolved work visible
Choose Drafted, Not applicable or Unresolved for each section using the workbook’s exact labels. Drafted describes the writing stage; it is not an assurance conclusion. Not applicable needs a reason tied to the inventory purpose and evidence. Unresolved records a real gap that requires a decision or more information.
Retain limitations even when a paragraph reads smoothly. Separate an absent source record from a reviewed estimate, and an unapproved exclusion from an accepted coverage decision. Record the reviewer and review evidence without implying that internal checking is independent assurance.
Give remaining actions an owner and a review route. A section can contain useful draft wording while a source or decision is still outstanding. Do not remove the open issue merely to make the note look finished. Where a checklist status and the underlying evidence disagree, resolve the evidence problem before release.
Use the fictional example as a writing pattern
The separate example uses invented file references and draft statements to show how an explanation can point to evidence and still retain a limitation. Section M11, Uncertainty and limitations, remains Unresolved with an owned action, so the complete note is not ready for release. It is not a completed inventory report, a client engagement or wording approved for a real organisation. Replace the example with your own explanation based on the supplied records.
The scaffold is a drafting aid, not a reproduction of a standard’s reporting checklist. It does not establish that all required disclosures have been addressed. Add any separately required report, methodology detail or specialist review outside the template where the actual engagement needs it.
Run a reader check before handover
Ask a reviewer to trace one reported line from the note to the activity record, factor entry, estimate where relevant and output cell.
Compare the period, boundary, units, version and reported result labels across the note and workbook.
Review every Not applicable explanation and each unresolved action. Preserve limitations in the released wording.
Freeze the accepted note and calculation edition together, and identify how a later correction will be recorded.
Official references for separate review
The official reporting and inventory-management references help the reader examine the wider requirements and process. The twelve-section drafting arrangement and its completion controls are original Nitium choices. The EPA process guidance is background material, not an Indian reporting obligation.
Download and preserve the working contract
Keep General base formats and paste values only. Text fields accept text or formulas returning text, not numbers or logical results. Numeric/date fields accept numbers or numeric-result formulas, not text numbers, logical results or errors. Enter dates with =DATE(year, month, day) or numeric serials. Dates must be whole serials 1–2958465. Localised date entry or source-format pasting can undermine tested Calc type checks. Restore the original format before relying on results.
Capacity is twelve fixed sections in rows 17–28. The reporting period must end no later than the fixed as-of date, and review dates must fall between period end and as-of. Keep the section identifiers and prompts intact. Write concise, evidence-specific text in the editable fields and keep longer supporting calculations in separately referenced files. Do not add or remove scaffold rows without redesigning and retesting the checks.
Verify this rebuilt version in your intended spreadsheet application before relying on it. Fresh headless Calc recalculation and rendered-file checks passed for these exact rebuilt files; desktop scrolling and Microsoft Excel behavior have not been tested. The working and Fictional example sheets have no frozen rows and retain only the first two identity columns while scrolling horizontally. Preserve the original input formats and use the field guide when editing the working copy. For dates before March 1900, check the calendar rendering in your chosen application.
